You know about Priyanka Sharma. The girl who was jailed by West Bengal police for sharing a meme on chief minister Mamata Banerjee. She has subsequently been released on Supreme Court’s intervention.
On her release, this is what Lutyens Media reported (headlines in bracket): Indian Express(“Morphed photo: SC grants bail to BJP workers, tell her to apologize”); The Hindu (“But court asks Priyanka Sharma to apologize for her action”); Times of India (“SC frees, directs her to apologize”) and last but not the least, Hindustan Times (“SC asks Priyanka Sharma to apologize to Bengal CM”). The word “apology” is in all the headlines or sub-headlines of these newspapers’ print editions of May 15, 2019.
But was apology a condition for Priyanka Sharma’s release? NO. It was an unconditionalrelease. The court order clearly says her release was not “ subject to” her apology. SC did ask her to apologize but it was not a pre-condition. PERIOD.
However, none of the newspapers gave a truthful account. They made sure “apology” appeared in their headlines even though it wasn’t a pre-condition for Priyanka Sharma’s release. Little did they realize they would be caught in their own mesh within 24 hours.
Now switch to Scene II. Next day, Priyanka Sharma, on her release, called a press conference and asserted she would not apologize.
Now this became a problem for our Lutyens Media. How do they cover it? They couldn’t have ignored Priyanka Sharma’s press conference. Nor could they give headlines that Priyanka Sharma has refused to apologize. Wouldn’t it amount to Contempt of Supreme Court? But if they press with this logical line, it would expose that “apology” was never a pre-condition. That all they had done was to dupe their readers a day before.
So they come up with another deceit. They made sure to mention Priyanka’s allegation that she was forced to sign a mafinama (apology affidavit). But they omitted her words that “she wouldn’t apologize”. Scan through all the four Lutyens Media and their print edition today and see if you could spot “she wouldn’t apologize” in the headlines. NONE.
Imagine. If SC asks you to apologize and you refuse, it’s a eight-column banner headline. But then apology was never a pre-condition. All the readers of Lutyens Media got was lies and machinations.
Now comes the operative part of my piece. Guess why Lutyens Media were afraid to make a “hero” out of Priyanka Sharma? And this is where I want your attention. All powers move on brands. You create a brand which could gather mass and it would come handy in due course. Kanhaiya Lal (rebel youth), Arvind Kejriwal (Magsaysay Award) for instance. These common men/women become a part of the eco-system where like-minded jurists, academicians, historians, actors, writers, bureaucrats, media all combine to create a matrix for unsuspecting readers and viewers from which they can’t break free. They make sure that you don’t hear/view/read any counter-narrative which could puncture their balloon of lies and deceit.
Now Priyanka Sharma has become a readymade brand. Brand against totalitarianism, a beacon for freedom of speech, defiance, an individual against the system. She needs just a puff of air to fly and inspire millions others. Like a ray of light, it could remove the cover of darkness over readers. And that’s a problem for Lutyens Media. This is beating them in their own game. So they make sure Priyanka Sharma remains grounded. That she remains obscure, more grievously injured than perhaps she was in a West Bengal jail. What if they have to invent lies and twists finer details to gang up against a young girl and her inspirational struggle against tyranny. All those slogans for “democracy”; “freedom of speech” “freedom of expression” are only convenient tools. They were never in a fight against “the fascist forces.”
Readers, if you cross check the facts I mention and find them true, what could you do? PLENTY. I sincerely believe the “Deep State” or “Break India” forces largely depend on their two organs: (a) media; (b) a type of education without which you can’t make a career. It’s their best bet to keep the citizenry uneducated and servile. That unfortunately is you and me. Suckered.
What you can do is to start reading your newspapers closely. And then cross-checking with those who keep an eye on them: Swarajya Mag; OpIndia and NewsBred etc. If you find you’ve been duped by your newspapers you could (a) confront them on social media, e.g twitter; (b) insist on a response; (c) and if both the first two options bear no results, stop paying and subscribing to these newspapers.
This would have a cascading effect. Lutyens Media would be forced to mend its way. If they don’t, they lose readers and become impotent organs for their masters. Trust me, if your newspapers are straightened out, India is saved. If India is saved, so are you and your kids.

I am posting this tweet. You should do it too. Ask everyone around you to do so. Force a reaction from them. Corner them. Not once but every-time their lies are exposed in the websites I have mentioned above. Only when the readers rise up against their Lutyens Media would they fall in line. Or go out of business. The fangs of the snakes would’ve been drawn.
Hindus need to look at how they address the forces against them in India.
It’s alright to be outraged that a Kathua has politicians, actors and presstitutes creating a sustained surround sound while reducing a similar rape in a madarsa akin to a weather bulletin.
You see a Shekhar Gupta plaster his twitter’s wall page with the image of Kathua lawyer; Bollywood bimbos hold placards in protest; Rajdeep Sardesai and Sagarika Ghose convulse through dozens of tweets on Kathua but the Madarsa rape doesn’t interest these clergies of morality.
The same on Biplab Das. The cabal has woken up to Tripura and are hounding a young politician who was central to a tectonic shift in North East in a truly historic election of independent India. Das is used as an excuse to parody the Hindu gods; there is a silent acquiescing to a profane Western historian calling Rama a “pig”. Neither “Janeudhari” Rahul Gandhi nor “Why-I-Am-A-Hindu” Shashi Tharoor are offended.
This cabal would hammer away at a Biplab Das but the constant blabbering and lies of a Rahul Gandhi is met with “his-speech-is-improving” innuendo.
There is a forceful counterpoint—I would term them as “Lone Rangers” henceforth–from OpIndia and SwarajyaMag; Postcard News and PGurus; a few TV news networks stand up to the shameless; erudite voices such as David Frawley, Rakesh Sinha and firebrand Shefali Vaidya rip open this Zanus-faced cabal. Yet it all appears a mine-blast compared to the guided munitions which rain from the sky.
What’s the trick outraged Hindus are missing?
Social Media: The Left-Liberal cabal has only 8-10 voices which it has created and promoted into brands (It has to be a “creation” for they never ever take a critical look as Christo-Islamic forces). The “nexus” works with everyone promoting and shielding each other. Those voices are picked by a similar network abroad. Stray voices, similar themes and a lie is easily brushed into a truth.
Our “Lone Rangers” on the other hand rarely form a formation. At the most a retweet and a shelf-life of a few hours. Mostly, each to his own. There is no method. There is no understanding that a sum is bigger than the parts.
Television: Most of us remember a harebrained Saba Naqvi; a mangy John Dayal or a scruffy Kumar Ketkar from TV debates on Prime Time. Could you name any independent neutral voice you remember? There are dime-a-dozen forceful presences on twitter (What the heck, let me bite my own bullet and name my favourite Dirty Dozen: @mediacrooks, @nesenag, @shefvaidya @unsubtledesi @rahulroushan, @rajivmessage, @davidfrawleyved, @madhukishwar, @mvmeet, @SreeIyer1 @thejaggi and @ARanganathan72). Not all are right-wing voices; some could be overtly critical too of NDA government (like @mediacrooks, @ARanganathan and @thejaggi). Yet, either they shy away or TV networks keep them out. This must change. TV news are very stale and badly needs fresh voices. Social Media must bring out a sustained pressure on them to “open up” TV studios.
Print media: This is the difficult part. Mainstream media, especially English, is already controlled by Left-Liberal cabal. Regional media have a huge role as a counteracting force. They must seek out above independent voices and give them space.
A tactics which we could learn from Lutyens Media is how they create a narrative and then sustain it. They pick up a subject, sustain it with old and new information, new angles, helpful interviews, columns in edits and even anniversaries! And what “Lone Rangers” have done with Madarsa Rape? A customary objection and little else. Haven’t we shifted our focus away from Audrey Truschke too soon? (And don’t give me the BS that it would only make her a star).
It’s all about rallying to a cause. It alone sustains passion and reverses the narrative.
Bollywood: It has long been controlled by dubious funds and Muslim-centric ethos. A “pujari” is always shown lecherous (e.g Kanhaiya Lal or a Shakti Kapoor) while a “Muslim” character is invariably depicted as paanch-time namazi (viz a A.K. Hangal). All the right-minded Indians could do is to expose their duplicity–regularly.
The above four forces–to go with the fifth of school texts and academia–control the narrative. “Lone Rangers” need to grow muscles to counter it. Own ivory towers won’t help. As long as heart is in the right place, differences in IQs, fan-following, language quality, status must not matter. IT MUST NOT MATTER.
“Lone Rangers” clearly suffer from resources. But for their toil and time, sweat and passion, there is little in support. Most of them sacrifice their working hours or leisure time with family to do what they feel is necessary for India’s future. They need be supported, not judged through prejudicial, hierarchical lenses.
These voices need be sustained; be called over to seminars and panel discussions; be invited to educational institutions for lectures; be part of alternative litfests. I have been a journalist all my life and trust me, voices mentioned about talk more sense than my own discredited professional community.
Lack of time ought not to be any excuse. Hit the road in protests on your temples, education and religion. Don’t back off. Only those who assert their identity, retain their identity.
A call must go out to corporate houses. Look at how The Wire gets its funds. They are given funds by a foundation which has trustees such as Aamir Khan, Azim Premji, Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, TN Ninan. If you can’t spare time to write or debate, at least spare change from your pockets, big or small, and make a difference. Or remain deluded with the story that a hard-working tortoise wins race in the end.
Till a few years ago, it was quite a fun to “spot the difference” between two almost identical images. The challenge was irresistible with the taunt that the two images differed on at least 10 counts. You scratched your head, forgot the world, and strained your eyes and crowned yourself genius once the task was accomplished.
Reading Indian Express these days is an exercise of a similar order. You have to match the headlines, the text and the photo and then pour over inverted commas and quotes to understand where the mischief has been planted. It’s not an easy order for most such Fake News are spread over two pages and are 1000-plus words, relying on time-tested tactics that readers would give up after headline or a few first paragraphs. It costs me hours but I have worked out a way to get through this maze. My strike rate is 99 out of 100 which is good enough and satiates my “spot-the-difference” urge.
First, of course are the stories on Front Page. Indian Express these days have reserved it to Modi-Centre-BJP bashing. (Now Yogi Adityanath is inching up the charts). Even on Front Page, the bigger decks accorded to a headline, the more reasons to suspect a mischief hiding in the text-matter. Most importantly, I make it a point to read the final two paras. It’s almost guaranteed that the saner, and the essential truth of the story, is in these two paras. After you read it, you go through the story backwards and spot the Fake News It’s a science folks! You got to give the devil his due. (Oh, I am sorry. Leftists don’t believe in Gods or Devils).
There are a few other Fake News spotters in Indian Express. If there is any Front Page news on Dalits, you got to really flush your lens and go through it. Most likely, such stories appear in profusion before an Assembly elections. Many a times these stories are discredited—as you would find in this link of my aggregated stories in NewsBred. Either Indian Express doesn’t carry an apology—like the fake moustache story on Dalits in Gujarat recently—or the Fake-News-buster true account is buried in inside pages.
You could also be sure that the anniversaries of all unfortunate victims of Muslim community, Akhlaq and Pehlu etc, would deserve a Front-Page mega spread, most likely as anchor story. (Never mind, Hindu victims never get such a privilege, some would say not even our soldier martyrs). Now, you must watch out for June 23, 2018 when it would be a year to Junaid Khan’s unfortunate killing in Ballabhgarh. I am second-guessing, you would have an Indian Express anchor on Junaid Khan, come June 23 next year.
I am not even coming to JNU’s Kanhaiyas and Umar Khalids of our world. I am also not mentioning how the coverage of grieving parents and relatives of minority victims—mind you never a Hindu victim–sitting at Jantar Mantar or taking out a demonstration on Capital streets has half-a-page reserved for it. How BHU girls agitation is a news and not that of AMU protesting girl students. For these are subjective matters and is the prerogative of a newspaper. To push the agenda, our mainstream English media-the Lutyens’ Media—let’s its editorial spread of two pages to do the dirty job.
Our attention is Fake News and so we must return to the subject. The second lead of Indian Express today is: “Slowdown concern, need to push growth jobs: PM’s advisors”
Quite a few things in this headline and the positioning of the story got my antennas up. I could smell Fake News in the use of “concern” and “PM’s advisors” in the headline. Would PM’s advisors really go public with their “concern” on the state of the economy? And the use of “PM’s advisors” and not the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) was a giveaway on who is meant to be a fall guy. All the economic ills of the country, by inference, must be put at the door of the Prime Minister. His own advisors are expressing concern at their own authoritarian ruler, that’s the inference.
The fake use of “concern” was easy to spot. The Express quoted part-time member Ashima Goyal that EAC would “work as a sounding board of ideas.” But Express cleverly preceded this quote with an inserted view of their own of “concern.” Read this particular para and make up your own mind:
There is a lot of concern about the economy today and the Council will “work as a sounding board of ideas”, EAC member Ashima Goyal said.
(The Express cleverly held back the full designation of Ashima Goyal. She is a part-time and not full-time EAC member).
That being so, I poured over the rest of the lengthy story. Then I read the same story in Times of India and Hindustan Times. I was intrigued that the Times of India prominently put in a front-page lead box the view of another EAC part-time member Rathin Roy that “IMF’s growth projections are 80% wrong…World Bank’s growth projections are 65% wrong. The government’s estimates are right more than 90% of the time.” However, the front page 1000-plus wordathon of Indian Express has no mention of it at all!
It is such selective and distorted coverage which has made Indian Express lose all its respect in the eyes of the discerning readers. It is morally wrong, agenda-driven, and worse a case of cheating against its paying-consumers. When the readers are seeking true coverage and information, they are getting blighted and manipulated coverage. Indian Express must be having its own compulsion, their hands could be forced but the newspaper would do well to heed this opinion of one of its readers: “I haven’t seen any story which favours a Hindu viewpoint in Indian Express for ages, at least on front page).” The worst thing a newspaper could do to its reputation is to appear biased and agenda-driven.
